This is a coastal scene on the edge of a storm. A heavy wall of rain is moving across the sea, the dark mass of cloud above it billowing white at its edges, while white chalk cliffs stand solid to the right. The sea below is calm by comparison — a band of vivid teal along the horizon giving way to the deep blue-grey beneath the approaching weather.

The tall, narrow format was deliberate. It suited the drama of the composition — the weight of the sky pressing down, the rain advancing — and pushed me to think differently about how to move the eye through the image. I wanted the stillness of the water below to sit in quiet contrast to the turbulence above.
